Firebuds | CG Technical Direction, Animation & VFX
00_firebuds-091522_1180w-600h.jpg

As a CG Technical Director at Disney Television Animation, I contributed to Firebuds across character animation, VFX compositing, lighting, rendering, pipeline operations, quality control, and final episode delivery. My work often spanned the full lifecycle of a shot—from blocking, keyframing, and polishing character performances in Maya through rendering, multi-pass compositing, and final image refinement in Nuke.

Beyond individual shot work, I supported the technical flow of episodic production by ingesting external vendor deliveries, validating shot data and cloud synchronization, performing technical and visual quality checks, and preparing completed episodes for final delivery. During Season 3, I also provided lead coverage, trained incoming team members, and expanded workflow documentation that became standardized across Disney Television Animation.

My Contributions
Shot Production, Animation & VFX
  1. Animated and refined character performances in Maya, including blocking, keyframing, timing, staging, retakes, and final performance polish in response to creative notes.

  2. Composited CG shots in Nuke using multi-pass render and AOV workflows, refining lighting, materials, color, atmosphere, and final image integration.

  3. Carried shots across animation, scene adjustments, rendering, and compositing, troubleshooting creative and technical problems through final delivery.

  4. Performed specialized compositing work including matte extraction, tracking, roto, paint, cleanup, 2D/3D lighting adjustments, projections, and STMap-based texture integration.

Pipeline, Vendor Ingest & Quality Control
  1. Ingested external vendor deliveries and validated that shot assets, production data, and associated media transferred correctly into internal production systems.

  2. Monitored cloud synchronization and production databases to confirm shot completeness, data integrity, and readiness for downstream work.

  3. Performed technical and visual quality-control checks across incoming and completed material, identifying delivery issues and coordinating corrections before final approval.

  4. Prepared and delivered completed episodes to directors and Disney Junior leadership, validating final picture, audio/video synchronization, and technical readiness before delivery.

Leadership, Training & Documentation
  1. Served as acting lead during Season 3, supporting production coordination, technical decision-making, shot status, and team workflows.

  2. Trained incoming artists and technical team members on established production processes and troubleshooting procedures.

  3. Created and expanded production documentation for recurring workflows, contributing practices that were subsequently standardized across Disney Television Animation.

Process & Collaboration

My work on Firebuds frequently crossed multiple stages of the episodic CG pipeline. For shot-level work, I could begin in Maya by blocking or refining a character performance, adjusting timing or staging, addressing animation notes, or troubleshooting scene elements. From there, I might update lighting or renders and carry those changes into Nuke, where I worked with multi-pass CG imagery and AOVs to refine lighting, materials, color, integration, and final presentation.

My responsibilities also extended beyond individual shots into production operations. I ingested deliveries from external vendor partners, verified cloud synchronization and production-database records, confirmed that required assets and shot data transferred correctly, and performed visual and technical QC before work continued downstream. As episodes approached completion, I helped validate final media—including picture and audio synchronization—and prepared finished episodes for delivery to directors and Disney Junior leadership.

During Season 3, I also provided lead coverage and supported the broader team through workflow coordination, new-hire training, technical troubleshooting, and production documentation. I documented recurring processes and best practices so that artists could navigate complex workflows more consistently, with several of those practices becoming standardized across Disney Television Animation.
